So, a couple of weeks ago, I went to a new media and technology conference for universities. It was interesting...in its own way, I suppose. Anyway, the CTO of Six Apart, the company that used to own LiveJournal, spoke about the future of social media. Afterwards, I went up to ask him a couple of questions, namely to ask him why Six Apart sold LiveJournal. From what I've witnessed, there doesn't seem to be a change in attitude regarding the new management company. In fact, people might be unhappier than not, for all I know. *shrugs*
Anyway, he smiled at me and explained that LJ was full of people who would never be happy with what they (Six Apart), as a company, could do for them. He also mentioned the word "drama."
And, TBH, I've got to agree with him. When I page through different LJ comms or individuals' profiles, there seems to be a lot of bitching about this (to most) free service that allows us to share our love of whatever. Oh, yeah, and people protest a lot for reasons that don't necessarily make sense...or that they fully understand. But, maybe that's just me?
And the ATLA fandom alone has been full of wankery since the NYCC trailer was released, along with the two eppies of "The Boiling Rock." The ship "war" is getting pretty silly billy and has caused some community defections, massive butthurt, and pissed off folks on both sides of the supposed "war." (I use quotes because I think it's fairly lame-o ranchero to call what's going on a war because, you know, we're in an actual war...)
So, to quote Rodney King, "Can't we all just get along?" And, to quote myself, when will the seemingly endless stupid end? :/

And it's definitely hilarious and kind of frightening -- I mean, if people can become that committed to a fictitious relationship (and this goes for all shipping) to get into fights with people over it, why can't we get people more involved in issues that really matter, like political activism or volunteering?
Oh well, I guess I'll just continue to be amused and watch people kvetch/cry/moan/shout over fictitious relationships...
as for the atla ship war, it's not necessarily wanting people to ship my ship that gets me worked up, it's other people telling me that if i DON'T ship THEIR ship, i'm delusional and retarded and "it's just not going to happen" and "everything in the canon completely contradicts it" etc etc. it kind of goes back to the 6A thing - i don't like people telling me what to think.
and so long as there are people on this planet with means of expressing themselves anonymously or semi-anonymously, there will be drama. it's just human nature.
As for ATLA, I understand the whole "no need to ship my ship" bit, I do that, too. And I agree that people should stop being asshats regarding shipping and calling each other delusional (see: Zutara haters who need "real proof"). But, I guess I have an easier time turning off the haters -- I don't pick fights with people looking for a fight; it's just too much wasted time and energy. Kind of hooks up with my general belief in pacifism, too, I guess. *shrugs*
And I would amend your last comment -- as long as there are people on this planet, there will be drama. It's simply human nature, anonymous or not.
Yeah, me too! I mean, capitalism is great and all, but really, does everything need to turn a profit in order to stick around? Can't we enjoy things just to enjoy them instead of trying to make another buck out of it?
